Some 400 years ago Franciscan monks began teaching Christians in Bethlehem the art of carving the lovely wood of the olive tree. Over the centuries this art has been passed down to generation after generation of Bethlehem craftsmen. Modern technology somewhat speeded the process but each piece has to be carved by hand by a skilled carver with at least 6 or 7 years of training to get a quality product.

The olive tree is not cut down to produce these lovely carvings, they are made from the prunings. These prunings are essential to the healthy growth of these special trees that live to be hundreds of years old.
